13-094 Deputies Respond To Near Drowning; 13-Year-Old Sustains Non-Life Threatening Injuries

What:
Deputies responded to a near drowning in St. Pete Beach (beachside near the Alden Resort). When deputies arrived on scene, the victim was already on shore conscious and breathing. She was transported by ambulance to All Children’s as a precautionary measure for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

When:
Deputies responded to the near drowning at about 2:28 p.m. on Sunday, May 5, 2013.

Where:
Deputies responded to 5900 Gulf Boulevard in St. Pete Beach (beachside – Alden Resort).

Why/How:
Deputies responded to the beachside of the Alden Resort in response to a reported drowning. When deputies arrived, they found the victim, 13-year-old Asia Pinkney laying on the waters edge. Her 15-year-old sister Nataijah Pinkney was with her. Deputies say the two girls had been swimming in the gulf and became exhausted due to the waves and current. Asia started to go under when she was pulled ashore by an unidentified good Samaritan and by her sister. A second unidentified good Samaritan was also assisting the victim on shore.

Her mother, Latresh Pinkney and other family members had been just north of this location when the incident occurred.

When deputies arrived on scene Asia was conscious and breathing. As a precaution, Asia was transported by ambulance to All Children’s Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.

The Pinkney family was visiting Florida from Georgia.
